#PitchWars Mentee Bio

I have taken the official plunge and dipped into the chaos of THE PITCH WARS (WARS-wars-wars), hosted by the always amazing Brenda Drake! While I've only previously messed with #PitMad, I've always participated on the cusp of #PitchWars. Now, with so many rejections and close calls, I've decided to throw my hat in toward gaining a mentor!

As part of that, I've joined others in creating our Mentee Bios for a Contestant Hop! Be sure to check out the other fine writers that have thrown ourselves to the lions once more.

About Me

As a writer, I have been writing since Fall 2005. I had been toying with long form short stories for years, even spending time in college pursuing a Letter degree. However, I took classes from a writer who has sold over a hundred books, under multiple pseudonyms. Through his help, I was able to finish my first novel in three months! After several edits, it's still a hot mess, but that's why it's in my proverbial sock drawer.

In the years since, I've taken the hard method of developing novels, but it's what I expect as a "pantser." I now have four complete novels, with a few partials that inform later manuscripts. I am dedicated to improving my novels, willing to cut out entire swaths and replacing it with stronger, improved material.

Why THE FAITHFUL?

The Faithful is a mix of genres, playing with expectations as the story continues on. It starts with our MC, Raine Morgan, a collector for a city-wide mob family. He does everything he can to keep his marks out of danger, even going so far as to pay their debts. When he's given a job to hunt down some of the worst abusers, he's pulled into a story of murder, survival, and avoiding the law. However, as more characters enter his journey, the points of view expand until a group of living gods are revealed and civil war breaks out between them, destroying the city in the process as the gods learn than they too can die.

While it is about Raine Morgan and his journey to becoming the newest god, it is also about the city of Sandhyanen and how these events affect everyone from the average citizen to the gods that used to inspire this society.

Justin D. Herd

Justin D. Herd is a purveyor of the weird and strange. He occasionally squawks at friends and family, but does so only under the cover of night. Okay, that's not true. He squawks in full daylight. Drinking games have been built around his peculiarities, but the truth of it is this: he is a loving husband, with two wonderful dem--children. One growls at things he likes, including pretty women. The other has started to learn hand-eye coordination. Neither had made it to the tender age of three. From there, things will only get more interesting. He spends most of his writing time either at a coffee shop or sitting at one of his many desks around his house. Any other place makes it nearly impossible for him to write. He uses horror movies and rock music to help get the juices flowing. His favorite authors are Jeremy Robert Johnson, Alan Campbell, Terry Pratchett, Justin Cronin, and Patrick Rothfuss. He consumes most of his books through audiobooks, but still loves his personal library and getting lost in the printed word.
